A Journey of Renewal This Lent
As we approach the holy season of Lent, we are invited into a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal. It’s a season that calls us to draw nearer to God and open our hearts to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. This year, I am excited to offer a unique opportunity to deepen our faith and enrich our journey toward Easter.
Beginning on Sunday, March 9, we will gather at 9:00 a.m. in the Parlor for a six-week study of Richard J. Foster’s acclaimed book, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth. This timeless guide, now in its updated 40th-anniversary edition, has been hailed as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, helping countless Christians discover a richer, more vibrant connection with God.
In Celebration of Discipline, Foster explores the “classic disciplines” of the Christian faith—practices that have sustained believers for centuries. These are divided into three categories:
Each week, we’ll focus on one or two disciplines, combining Foster’s insights with scripture, practical Lenten traditions, and video excerpts of Foster himself teaching on these topics. Whether you’re encountering these disciplines for the first time or seeking to deepen your understanding, this course will provide inspiration, guidance, and practical tools for your spiritual journey.
The study will conclude on Sunday, April 13 (Palm/Passion Sunday), offering a meaningful way to prepare for and celebrate the Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday) and resurrection of Jesus. All are welcome to join, and no prior experience with the book is necessary. You will need a copy of Celebration of Discipline (available on Amazon) and a Bible.
This Lent, let’s take the opportunity to not only set aside distractions but to take on transformative practices that help us grow closer to God. Together, we’ll explore how the spiritual disciplines can infuse our lives with joy, peace, and purpose.
If you would like to participate, get the book and show up in the church parlor on March 9. No need to sign up. I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
Peace and all good, Pr. Steve

- The Inward Disciplines: Meditation, prayer, fasting, and study—practices that nurture personal transformation.
- The Outward Disciplines: Simplicity, solitude, submission, and service—ways to reflect God’s presence in daily life.
- The Corporate Disciplines: Confession, worship, guidance, and celebration—practices that strengthen our shared faith and community.
